NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Six Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University State Team, the organization announced Friday. Richmond's Kim Egizi and Megan Gianforte were named to the First-Team, while Spider teammates Leslie Espenschied and Sam Geiersbach were named to the Second-Team, joined by George Mason's Alexa McGovern and VCU's Sky Hyatt.
The 2015 VaSID Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-State honoree, Egizi posted another solid season for the Spiders on the attacking end. The Westwood, Mass., native was named to the All-Conference first team after hitting the 100-career point, goal, ground ball and draw control milestones in 2017. Egizi finished third on the team with 41 goals and 74 points, while her 33 assists on the year were good for second on the team and third in single-season program history. Her 98 draw control wins were the second-most in a single season for the Spiders.
Gianforte recorded one of the most successful goalkeeping performances in Spider women's lacrosse history in 2017. She earned All-Conference First Team and All-Rookie Team honors for her efforts, becoming the first rookie to win the league's top goalie honors since 2006. Gianforte stopped 186 shots and finished the season with a .499 save percentage, good for first in the conference and top 10 nationally. Her 9.48 goals against average also lead the conference, while her 49 ground balls were the most of any Spider this season. She was also honored by the A-10 with four Defensive Player of the Week honors, a program record.
Espenschied wrapped up an impressive career on the defensive end, earning her second-straight All-Conference Second Team honors. The Senior also became just the third Spider to earn Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors in two consecutive seasons. Espenshied led the team with 19 caused turnovers on the year and finished fourth with 32 ground balls. She earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors once for her efforts.
Geiersbach burst onto the scene for the Spiders, earning A-10 Rookie of the Year and All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team honors. Selected as the A-10 Rookie of the Week five times throughout the season, she set single-season program records for both points (85) and goals (66), while also leading the conference in goals, goals per game and points per game. Geiersbach also finished fourth on the team with 19 assists, and fifth in both ground balls (28) and caused turnovers (12).
McGovern led the Patriots with 53 goals in 2017 for the second-highest mark in a single season in program history. She recorded 61 points to lead the team and rank fifth-most in a season. Her 70 draw controls were second-most on the team and she leaves Mason as the all-time leader in draw controls with 181. She also ranked second on the team last season in shooting percentage (.541).The three-time Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference selection scored 130 goals for her career to finish third all-time in the Mason record books. She played in 67 games and made 51 starts over the last four years.
Hyatt, a redshirt sophomore, led the team with 44 goals scored and a team-high 63 points. She was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team after she led the team with 49 ground balls and 36 draw controls. Hyatt also added 19 assists which ranked third on the squad. Hyatt ranked eighth in the A-10 in goals and total points, fourth in ground balls and was second in the conference in caused turnovers. Hyatt was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week on April 18 after scoring 11 goals and adding three assists. She also had nine draw controls, six caused turnovers and and two grounds balls in two games. Hyatt also earned A-10 All-Academic Team Honors as she holds a 3.60 GPA with a major in business.
