NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Fordham sophomore Olivia Fairchild was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while VCU sophomore Jasmin Sneed earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Fordham freshman McKenna Lahr was also selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. All awards were for matches played on the opening weekend Aug. 25-27.
Fairchild, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, picked up right where she left off last season, helping Fordham to its first 3-0 start since 2010. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the New Orleans Invitational after posting an attack percentage of .427 over three matches, averaging 4.33 kills per set (52 total kills) to go with seven service aces, 17 digs (1.42 per set) and four total blocks. The outside hitter from Phoenix, Ariz., opened the year with a match-high 18 kills and a .571 attack percentage to go with six aces and five digs against Southeast Missouri State. She also recorded a match-high 23 kills and nine digs in a five-set win over New Orleans before finishing with 11 kills and a .588 hitting percentage in a sweep of Alcorn St.
Sneed recorded 14.0 blocks and averaged 1.40 blocks per set during a 2-1 weekend for the Rams in the Texas A&M Invitational. The middle blocker from San Antonio, Texas, recorded nine blocks in the win over Texas State followed by four blocks and six digs in a win against Sam Houston State. Sneed also totaled nine digs and 23.5 points for the weekend.
Lahr earned all-tournament honors at the New Orleans Invitational after hitting .297 over three matches with 28 kills and 29 digs. The outside hitter from Lindenhurst, Ill., recorded her first career double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs in a five set win over New Orleans.
