NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham junior Janos Loebe and VCU senior Rafael Andrade Santos were named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Davidson senior Sam Bissett was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Dayton’s Thor Helgason earned Rookie of the Week Honors. The awards, announced Tuesday, were for games played Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
In Fordham’s lone contest this week, Loebe scored the game-winning goal against St. John’s on Friday night. The forward from Kierspe, Germany, registered three shots in the game. The 1-0 win is the Rams first over St. John’s since 1990.
Santos rose to the challenge on Sunday night, as VCU trailed Saint Francis 2-1 in the 67th minute. The senior from Rio de Janerio, Brazil, converted both a PK goal and grabbed an assist, all within 54 seconds to flip the script and send the Rams home with their first win of the season, a 3-2 victory. His three points would give him five on the season, putting him as the current top point’s leader for the Black & Gold.
Bissett came up big for the Wildcats in goal, leading them to a 1-0 blanking of Radford on Sunday afternoon. In addition to his first career shutout, the Cary, N.C., native faced 17 shots and recorded a game-high four saves.
Helgason, a freshman forward, scored his team-leading second goal of the season in a 4-1 win over Western Illinois last Friday. The Reykjavik, Iceland, striker has scored twice in four starts for the Flyers.
