NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts senior Sarah Hawkshaw was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s freshman Quinn Maguire was picked as the league’s Rookie of the Week. Both awards are for games played from Sept. 4-10.
Hawkshaw scored on two of her three shots, including one game-winner, during a weekend-sweep of Sacred Heart and No. 16 Boston University. The forward from Dublin, Ireland, tallied a goal in each of the games on the weekend, which included a 1-0 shutout of Sacred Heart and 2-1 come-from-behind win against No. 16 Boston University. She had the lone goal against the Pioneers in the 31st minute. Hawkshaw then sparked the Minutewomen to their comeback win over BU on Sunday with the first of two consecutive UMass tallies.
Maguire, who was named Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week last week, scored two goals in Sunday's win over No. 22 Rutgers, including the game-winner. With the game tied and just under 20 minutes to play in the second half, Maguire put her own rebound past the Scarlet Knight keeper to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The forward from Media, Pa., then added an empty-netter as time expired to set the final margin. Maguire now ranks among the league leaders with a team-high five goals on the season.
