NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— George Mason’s Logan Miller and Saint Louis’ Manuel de Backer were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Cross Country Co-Performers of the Week. Saint Louis’ Courtney Link was named the Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week. Also honored were SLU’s Ben Naeger, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Rhode Island’s Kelly Iocca, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held Sept. 4-10.
Miller, a senior from Chantilly, Va., finished first at the James Madison Invitational on Saturday at New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va. with a time of 25:55.0 over the 7.9K course. The performance was his first meet victory in his collegiate career - and his first top 10 finish.
De Backer, a junior from Essen, Belgium, won the season-opening 2017 Forest Park XC Festival finishing the 7.5K in a time of 24:39.23. De Backer’s time was more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and marked the first individual title of his career.
Link, a senior from Mazomanic, Wisc., led the Billikens at the Forest Park XC Festival, finishing second overall in the 5K with a time of 18:48.39. Link also helped SLU capture the team title at the Forest Park XC Festival for the second year in a row.
In his first collegiate meet, Naeger finished second in the Forest Park XC Festival a 7.5K time of 24:52.41. The freshman from St. Genevieve, Mo., helped the Billikens capture the team time of the Forest Park XC Festival for the second year in a row.
Iocca, a freshman from Oaksdale, N.Y., finished 11th in the Nassaney Invitational with a time of 18:21.7. Her time was only 1.9 seconds behind Rhode Island's top finisher.
