NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Dayton junior Lauren Bruns was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while Rhode Island senior Marie Gillcrist and VCU sophomore Jasmin Sneed earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Saint Louis freshman Maya Taylor was also selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. All awards were for matches played Sept. 11-17.
Bruns led the Flyers averaging 4.69 kills per set over the week. She recorded a career-high 22 kills while hitting .600 on Friday in a 3-0 win over Northern Illinois. The outside hitter from Versailes, Ohio, tallied 14 kills against Western Kentucky and followed that with 15 kills against No. 25 Ohio State on Saturday. For the week, Bruns had an attack percentage of .358 and scored 4.92 points per set for UD.
Gillcrist recorded 19.0 blocks and averaged 1.46 blocks per set during a 2-1 week for the Rams. The middle blocker from Lakewood, Colo., set a new career-high against Dartmouth, registering 12 block assists. She also had 18 kills, 12 digs and averaged 2.42 points per set for the week.
Sneed recorded 20.0 blocks and averaged 1.43 blocks per set during a 4-0 week for VCU. The middle blocker from San Antonio, Texas, also had 23 kills, a hit percentage of .265 and 33.5 points for the week.
Taylor helped lead the Billikens to a 3-1 week. Taylor recorded 61 kills, averaging 3.81 per set while hitting .299 and notching six blocks. Against DePaul, she recorded 17 kills with a .375 attack percentage. Taylor was named to the All-Tournament team at the Billiken Invitational.
