NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Massachusetts teammates Erik Engstrom and Heather MacLean were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Also honored were Rhode Island’s Rock Fortna, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Kelly Iocca, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held Sept. 18-24.
Engstrom, a sophomore from East Hampton, N.Y., was the top finisher for the Minutemen for the second time in his career, completing the 8K course in 25:32. As a squad, UMass finished 13th with a score of 384 in the 18-team field at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.
MacLean, a senior from Peabody, Mass., led the UMass women's cross country team at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, turning in a seventh-place overall finish in a field of 189 runners with a time of 17:23 (5K). The field of teams competing included 11 of the top-15 teams from the latest USTFCCA Northeast Regional Rankings.
Fortna, a redshirt freshman from Doylestown, Pa., recorded a time of 25:59 (8K) and finished in 94th place at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.
Iocca, a freshman from Oakdale, N.Y., turned in a 5K time of 19:00 en route to a 110th place finish in the very competitive at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown. She was the third fastest finisher for the Rams.
