NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Mason senior Eric Edwards was selected as the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week, while Rhode Island freshman Chris Francoeur was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Friday and are for events played from Sept. 21-27.
Edwards tied for sixth at the season-opening Patriot Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at the Chantilly National Golf and Country Club. Edwards finished at one-over 217 (71-72-74) for his eighth career top-10 finish. The Salisbury, N.C., native helped Mason to a seventh-place finish with a 72.3 stroke average.
Francoeur made the biggest final-round jump among the field of 86 at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge, moving up 36 spots from 59th to 23rd place. After carding an opening-round 78 on Saturday, the Amesbury, Mass., product responded with a two-under 70 on Sunday. His combined 148 (78-70) put him at four-over for the tournament, helping the Rams to a seventh-place finish.
