NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Rhode Island sophomore Stavros Zarokostas was named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Monday, while George Washington sophomore Reese Moore was selected as Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman Davis Smith of Massachusetts was awarded Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played from Oct. 2 - 8.
Zarokostas, a midfielder/forward from Coventry, R.I., scored the game-winner in both games for the Rams last week, extending URI’s unbeaten streak to eight consecutive games. With Rhody and St. Bonaventure tied 2-2 on Wednesday night, Zarokostas recorded the game-winning goal in the 88th minute. Zarokostas also netted another game-winner Saturday night at La Salle, finding the back of the net in the 104th minute for the double-overtime victory. For his career, Zarokostas now has 33 career points in 31 games played.
Moore, a defender from Columbus, Ohio, played all 181 minutes on defense last week against George Mason and Dayton, helping the Colonials post back-to-back shutout victories in A-10 play. He picked up his first career assist in Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Flyers with a long ball into the box to set up the second goal.
Smith was awarded Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. The Amherst, Mass., midfielder scored three goals with an assist in two games for seven points. He scored the game-tying goal in a 2-1 win over Vermont in the 77th minute. Against Duquesne, his two goals and an assist extended his scoring streak to four games, with at least a point while scoring six goals in his last four contests.
