NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s junior Anna Willocks was named Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week Monday, while Massachusetts freshman Lucy Cooper was picked as the league’s Rookie of the Week. Both awards are for games played from Oct. 2-8.
Willocks totaled seven points as the 21st-ranked Hawks went 2-0 last weekend. On Friday, she assisted on the game-winning goal in the second half as SJU topped UC Davis, 2-1. The forward from Palmerston North, New Zealand, was then the catalyst for the Hawk offense in an 8-0 Saturday win over league-leading Saint Francis. Willocks assisted on a goal and added one of her own before halftime to help the Hawks jump out to a 3-0 lead at the break. She then added another goal before handing out another assist to tie the Saint Joseph's career assist record (26).Willocks leads the conference in points (28) and assists (10) while ranking tied for second in goals.
Cooper had a four-point weekend with a goal and two assists on both of UMass’ game-winning tallies. A forward from Karori, New Zealand, she scored and dished out an assist in a home win over VCU Friday. Cooper then followed that up with a helper on Sarah Hawkshaw’s game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Providence Sunday. She leads all UMass freshmen with 17 points this season (5 goals, 7 assists).
