NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Massachusetts’ Dawson Bathgate and Heather MacLean were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Also honored were Rhode Island’s Rock Fortna, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and teammate Kelly Iocca, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held Oct. 2-8.
Bathgate, a sophomore from Rochester, N.Y., led UMass with a 12th place finish at the New England Championships, completing the 8K course in 25:37.3. His performance helped lead the Minutemen to a third-place team finish in the 27-team field.
MacLean, a redshirt senior from Peabody, Mass., captured the individual title at the New England Championships. With a time of 17:36.1. She dominated the field of 194 runners, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Fortna, a freshman from Doylestown, Pa., finished 54th with a time of 26:26 at the New England Championships.
Iocca, a freshman from Oakdale, N.Y., was second on the Rams, finishing 54th overall with a time of 19:10. She finished 8th among New England freshman competing in the event.
