Newport News, Va. - University of Massachusetts field hockey is ranked the No. 24 team nationally, as announced Tuesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for the week of Oct. 9. The Minutewomen earned a total of 97 votes in the poll, selected by NCAA Division I coaches. For the fourth consecutive week, Saint Joseph's held onto the No. 21 ranking.
UMass moved up four spots in the NCAA RPI rankings, claiming the No. 18 slot, the highest among Atlantic 10 squads. Two of UMass' remaining regular-season opponents are also ranked in the Coaches Poll, including No. 9 Northwestern (Oct. 15) and No. 21 Saint Joseph's (Oct. 20). The Minutewomen take on Saint Louis at 6 p.m. Eastern Time on Fri., Oct. 13 and wrap up a three-game road swing on Sun., Oct. 15 with a noon Eastern Time match at Northwestern.
The Hawks are ranked for the fifth consecutive poll after beating UC Davis, 2-1, on Friday and routing Saint Francis (Pa.), 8-0, on Saturday. Junior forward Anna Willocks netted seven points across the two games to earn Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors, while freshman forwards Jordan Olenginski (two goals) and Emily Henry (one goal, two assists) added four points apiece.
This week, Saint Joseph's will visit La Salle in a conference matchup before their contest when they host the No. 8 ranked Delaware Blue Hens. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
