AMHERST, Mass.— No. 2 Massachusetts scored once in each half to shutout No. 3 VCU, 2-0, and advance to the finals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship Friday at Gladchuk Sports Complex.
The Minutewomen (13-7) reach the title match for the fifth straight year, where they will face top-seeded Saint Joseph’s at 2:00 pm om Saturday. The game will be a rematch of last year’s final, which UMass won 3-1. The Minutewomen have won four of the last five A-10 titles.
Sophie de Jonge scored Massachusetts’ first goal, a deflection off a shot by Melanie Kreusch at 24:13, a lead UMass took to halftime.
The evenly-matched battle gave the Minutewomen a slight 11-9 edge in shots, but the closely-played second half was completely balanced at five shots for each team. Grace Horgan broke through the even play for a UMass insurance goal at 49:34, off a deflected shot by Courtney Ocasal.
Chessa Kownurko made six saves for VCU (14-6), while Emily Hazard stopped two Rams shots for the Minutewomen.
