In a match that was mostly defensive, Offensive Player of the Year Rafael Andrade Santos broke through first for VCU when he heeled in the first goal of the night, he was assisted by Luc Fatton.
Siad Haji added the second goal for VCU on the second goal of the night that was heeled in from just in front of the net. Fortia Munts and Travis Cooke assisted Haji on the goal.
All-Rookie team selection, goalkeeper Mario Sequeira was outstanding in net for VCU. He faced six shots from Rhode Island and turned away all six shots he faced. Nils Leifhelm made two saves for Rhode Island in the contest.
With the win, VCU advances to the title game against Massachusetts. Game time is set for noon at Baujan Field on Sunday.
