NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton senior Jessica Sloan was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the week, while VCU senior Rebekah Strange was named Defensive Player of the Week. Saint Louis freshman Maya Taylor was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. All awards were for matches played Nov. 6 – 13.
Sloan recorded 4.00 kills per set for Dayton as the Flyers closed out the 2017 regular season with consecutive sweeps at George Washington and George Mason. The outside hitter from Dayton, Ohio, had seven kills, three blocks, three digs and three service aces Friday against the Colonials. On Saturday, Sloan tallied a match-high 17 kills to go with eight digs, two blocks and a service ace. For the weekend, she averaged 5.08 points, 1.83 digs and 0.83 blocks per set while hitting at .400.
Strange, a senior libero from Avon, Ind., dug a career-high 34 balls in VCU’s 3-1 win over Davidson that clinched an unbeaten (14-0) Atlantic 10 mark for the Rams. VCU has won 25 matches in a row and has captured its first A-10 regular season crown.
Taylor averaged 4.33 kills per set and hit .293 in road wins vs. George Mason and George Washington. The freshman outside hitter from Idaho Falls, Idaho, reached double digits in kills in both matches. She hit .542 (14-1-24) vs. George Washington, helping Saint Louis to a season-high .371 hitting percentage. Taylor had just one reception error in 18 attempts.
