Gunmundsson, Cunningham Share First A-10 Player of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson sophomore Jon Axel Gunmundsson and Dayton junior Josh Cunningham were chosen as the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week. Additionally, Davidson freshman Kellan Grady and Duquesne freshman Eric Williams, Jr. were chosen as the league’s Co-Rookies of the Week. The awards, announced Monday are the first of the year and for games played Nov. 10-12.


Gudmundsson just missed a triple-double in Davidson’s season-opening 110-62 win over Charleston Southern. In addition to a career-high 24 points, the guard from Grindavik, Iceland, matched personal bests with nine rebounds and eight assists without turning the ball over. Gudmundsson finished 7-of-10 from the floor, 5-of-8 from 3-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.


Cunningham scored a college career-high 22 points, including the game-winning post move with 0.1 seconds left to lift Dayton to a 78-77 win over Ball State. He was 8-of-11 from the field, 6-for-6 from the line, and also pulled down seven rebounds. The Chicago forward’s previous highs were 13 in a Dayton uniform last year and 17 while playing for Bradley in 2014-15. Cunningham scored eight of UD's final 13 points over the last 6:17 of the contest, starting with a dunk that gave the Flyers a lead they would not surrender.


Grady impressed in his first collegiate contest scoring 23 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists in just 18 minutes of action. All seven of the Boston guard’s field goals were 3-pointers as the freshman finished 7-of-12 from the floor, while making both of his free throws.


Williams recorded a 17 and 12 double-double in the season-opening win over St. Francis Brooklyn. The 12 boards were a game-high. The guard from New haven, Mich., scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, and he went 4-of-9 from the field with three dunks and a 3-pointer.  He sunk 5-of-6 from the stripe in the final :26 to turn a five-point DU lead into the final 10-point margin.



Dayton freshman Jalen Crutcher had six points and five rebounds in his Flyer debut … Duquesne’s Rene Castro-Caneddy scored 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting with four steals in the Dukes’ season-opening win … Jaire Grayer had two monster games for George Mason, turning in a 17-point, 9-rebound performance in a win over Lafayette, followed by a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double at No. 16 Louisville …  B.J. Johnson opened the season with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double, sinking 6-of-13 in the Explorers’ win Friday … Stanford Robinson shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the field for 18 points, and had seven steals in Rhode Island’s win over UNC Asheville … Rhody freshman Fatts Russell had six points and four assists in his debut as a Ram … Playing limited minutes, Saint Joseph’s Shavar Newkirk scored 21 points against Toledo in his return from last year’s season-ending injury … Saint Louis’ Aaron Hines led the Billikens with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field in the win against Seattle … SLU freshman Jordan Goodwin posted team highs of 10 rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocks … Justin Tillman was 4-of-6 en route to a 14-point, 10 rebound double-double in VCU’s dominant win over Grambling … Tillman’s freshman teammate Sean Mobley was 3-of-5 from 3-point range for nine points in the VCU opener.
