PITTSBURGH — VCU captured its first Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Sunday in thrilling fashion, defeating Dayton 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-13) in the championship final at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The top-seeded Rams, winners of 27 straight matches will receive the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Selection show will be held on Sunday, November 26 at 9:00 pm ET on ESPNU.
The first set was a back and forth affair that included 10 ties and six lead changes. VCU won the first set 25-23 after a withstanding a furious comeback by the Flyers to even up the score at 22-22.
Dayton rebounded strongly in the second set winning 25-21 to even the match. As a team, the Flyers hit .346 in the second set.
VCU responded by winning the third set, followed by the Dayton taking the fourth set. In a back-and-forth fifth set, the Flyers scored three straight points to take a 13-12 lead in the fifth set. Following a VCU timeout, the Rams finished with three consecutive points highlighted by a game-winning kill by Alica Kandler to claim the A-10 title.
VCU’s Vicky Giommarini, who was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Performer, was joined on the A-10 All-Championship team by teammates Tori Baldwin, Rebekah Strange and Gina Tuzzolo, recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs to lead the Rams.
