Bergman, Bullock Earn Swimming and Diving Weekly Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle’s Fabian Bergman and Amelia Bullock of Fordham were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Also honored was Massachusetts’ Chase Kent, who was named Men’s Rookie of the Week. Duquesne’s Emma Brinton and Fordham’s Michelle Martin were named the Women’s Co-Rookies of the Week.  The awards were based off performances from meets held on Nov. 13 – 19.

 

Bergman, a senior from Stockholm, Sweden, was a standout for La Salle at the Bucknell Invitational over the weekend with four first-place finishes. On the first day of the meet, he topped the leaderboard in the 200-yard individual medley with a final time of 1:49.22. On day two, he helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a victory in 1:30.66. He followed that up with another win later on with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 48.34 seconds. Bergman continued his impressive weekend, finishing the meet on Sunday by placing first in the 200-yard backstroke. His final time of 1:44.60 was over three seconds ahead of second place.

 

Bullock helped the Rams finish fourth at the Bucknell Invitational. The sophomore from Westport, Conn., finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (54.15) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.66). Both times in those events were career-best and season-best times for her. She added a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.36. Bullock competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing the event in 1:04.57.

 

Kent posted the seventh-fastest time in program history with a swim of 15:51.17 in the 1,650-yard freestyle on his way to finishing third. The freshman from Northville, Mich., finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:35.69. He also came in fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:02.95 after posting the second-fastest time in the prelims.

 

Brinton helped the Dukes to a second-place finish at the sixth annual Magnus Cup. The freshman from Landenburg, Pa., placed second in both the 100-yard individual medley (58.29) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.76) to go with a third-place mark in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.21). Duquesne tallied 1315 points across the three-day, 15-team event hosted by Cleveland State. Brinton has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week a school record-tying three times this year.

 

Martin, a freshman from Monterey, Calif., kicked off the Invitational with the 200 freestyle relay that took first in a season-best time of 1:33.67.  She won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 23.10 seconds. Martin took home seventh-place in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 56.05 seconds. She followed that up with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing the event in 55.82 seconds.  Martin was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that took fourth in a season-best time of 1:44.55, 400-yard medley relay team that finished fifth (3:49.55), and capped the invitational with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best time of 3:26.96.
