Noren, Ma Claim Tennis Weekly Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU’s Arvid Noren was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Fordham’s Carina Ma was named the Women’s Player of the Week. Noren won both of his singles and doubles matches across a 2-0 weekend for VCU. On Friday, the junior from Pitea, Sweden, defeated Dayton’s Zach Berry 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and teamed up with Javier Amantegui to beat Jordan Benjamin and Theodo Jener 7-6 at No. 2 doubles. On Sunday, he breezed through his No. 3 singles match against Dmitry Shatalin, winning 6-1, 6-3. He and Amantegui were also the first doubles victory of the afternoon, defeating RJ Sands and Nicholai Westergaard 6-4.
Ma, a junior from Hong Kong, defeated Seton Hall’s Anicka Fajnorova 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in a hard-fought match at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with Estelle Wong to defeat the Pirates 6-2 at the first doubles position.
Zgraggen had two crucial victories at No. 5 singles during a 2-0 weekend for VCU. Against Dayton on Friday, the freshman from Bern, Switzerland defeated Lorenzo Rollhauser 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match at 3-3 and help the Rams complete a dramatic comeback. On Sunday against Penn, Zgraggen won the deciding point for the Rams, beating Nicholai Westergaard in three sets. He picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles with fellow freshman Inigo Torre Martin, beating Quakers Aleks Huryn and Max Cancilla 7-5.
Yang, a freshman from Springfield, Va., posted a combined 2-0 record in singles and doubles to help the Patriots defeat Mount St. Mary’s 5-2 in the team’s spring opener on Sunday in Washington, D.C. Yang partnered with fellow freshman Brianna Gibbs for an easy 6-2 win in doubles. Then, at the No. 3 singles position as a freshman, Yang made quick work of her opponent, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). The victory also served as the clinching 4th point for the Patriots in the match.
