Johnson, Dowtin Share A-10 Player of the Week Award After Marquee Performances
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle senior B.J. Johnson and Rhode Island sophomore Jeff Dowtin were selected as the GEICO Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, while Davidson freshman Kellan Grady was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played Feb. 19-25.
Johnson averaged 26.0 points and 16.0 rebounds over two games for the Explorers, shooting 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the floor. The forward from Philadelphia had a career week, beginning with 29 points and a career-best 23 rebounds in an overtime loss to No. 18/18 Rhode Island. The 23 boards were one shy of the Atlantic 10 single-game record (George Washington’s Yinka Dare) and is tied for the second most for an NCAA Division I player this season. On Saturday, Johnson had 23 points and nine rebounds in a road win at Fordham, just shy of his eighth double-double of the year. Midway through the second half, Johnson’s short jumper from 12 feet also gave him 1,000 points for his two-year La Salle career.
Dowtin had a pair of 20-point performances to lead Rhode Island to wins at La Salle and against Dayton. The point guard from Upper Marlboro, Md., averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals while committing just one turnover. Dowtin began the week with a career-high 25 points to go with seven assists and five rebounds in the overtime win at La Salle. He was 11-for-12 (.917) at the free throw line, including clutch shots that sealed the game in overtime. He followed that up with 20 points, five assists and no turnovers against Dayton, shooting 9-for-11 (.818) from the field versus the Flyers. He shot .640 (16-of-25) from the field for the week.
Grady finished the week averaging 29 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while shooting 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the floor, 44 percent (4-for-9) from 3-point range and 80 percent at the charity stripe (16-of-20). The guard’s week began with a game-high 28 points and five rebounds, while going 11-of-13 (.846) from the floor in the ‘Cats home win over Fordham. The native of Boston capped his week by matching his season-high of 30 points on 8-of-14 (.571) shooting at Duquesne. In addition, he drilled 3-of-6 from long range and made 11-of-14 free throws.
