Curbeira, Costlow Claim Softball Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s Jess Curbeira was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week while George Washington’s Sarah Costlow earned Pitcher of the Week. Also honored was Saint Louis’ Alyssa Chavez, who was named Rookie of the Week.  The awards were based off performances from Feb. 19 – 25.   


Curbeira, went 10-for-13 (.769) with seven extra-base hits, including a home run in four games over the weekend. The junior from Henrico, Va., posted a .800 on-base percentage and a 1.538 slugging percentage to increase her early season slash line to .538/.552/1.038.

Costlow shined in her California homecoming with two wins in three starts at UC-Riverside’s Amy S. Harrison Classic. The senior from Riverside, Calif., allowed six earned runs in 18 innings for the week, including complete-game wins against Montana on Friday and New Mexico on Sunday. She posted a combined nine strikeouts over the three starts. Her best game came in the finale against Montana when she didn’t allow an earned run in GW’s 5-2 victory.

Chavez, a freshman from Fishers, Ind., was named to the Louisiana Tech Invitational All-Tournament team. She led the Billikens with a .429 batting average (6-for-14) and four runs. Chavez also added a double and a sacrifice fly over the weekend.
