NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington’s Matt Cosentino was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Saint Louis’ Jackson Wark earned Pitcher of the Week. Also honored was St. Bonaventure’s Braydon Nelson, who was named Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from Feb. 26 – March 4.
Cosentino, a senior from West Long Branch, N.J., reached base in all five games last week, including three multiple-hit games and tallied two five-RBI efforts as George Washington went 4-1. Cosentino started his week by hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to lead GW to a come-from-behind victory over Georgetown. In the first game against Monmouth, he had a massive game at the plate going 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI on Saturday. For the week, Cosentino batted .429 (9-of-21) over the five games with two home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored while playing flawless defense at first base.
Wark earned the win in a masterful performance on Sunday as the Billikens wrapped-up the series sweep against Chicago State. The junior from St. Albert, Alberta, went seven full innings and allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Wark threw just 79 pitches in his outing as he combined with Ryan Lefner to grab the shutout win for the Billikens.
Nelson, a freshman from Brecksville, Ohio, didn’t allow a run in 18 innings of work, his first as a collegiate pitcher. In his collegiate debut, Nelson struck out seven and walked only one, in the Bonnies 3-0 win over Mount St. Mary’s on Monday. On Sunday, he picked up a no-decision in a 1-0 10-inning loss in his nine innings of work, walking one and striking out seven. For the week, Nelson pitched 18 innings, struck out 15, walked two batters, and posted a 0.00 ERA.
