NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Three Atlantic 10 teams punched their postseason tickets Sunday, when Davidson, Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure all earned NCAA Tournament bids.
Davidson won its first A-10 title Sunday afternoon at the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship, which was played at Capital One Arena in Washington, earning the league’s automatic bid. Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure both earned at-large bids.
The Bonnies will open the A-10 postseason, playing as an 11 seed versus No. 11 UCLA Tuesday in the First Four in Dayton. Should Bona advance, they will face No. 6 Florida in Pittsburgh on Thursday.
Two A-10 teams have in the past made runs after starting in the First Four. VCU’s Final Four run in 2010 and La Salle’s 2013 Sweet 16 run both began at UD Arena.
The ‘Cats are a 12 seed and will face No. 5 Kentucky on Thursday in Boise, Idaho in a battle of Wildcats. The winner earns a date with the winner of No. 4 Arizona/No. 13 Buffalo
Rhode Island is a seventh seed and also plays Thursday, facing No. 10 Oklahoma in Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena, where the Rams won an A-10 Championship last year. Rhody would face the No. 2 Duke/No. 15 Iona winner, should they advance.
