Rivero Crespo, Rasmussen Claim Tennis Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –VCU’s Ignacio Rivero Crespo was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while VCU’s Anna Rasmussen was awarded the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second straight week, the league announced on Wednesday. Also honored were Rivero Crespo’s teammate, Inigo Torre Martin, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season and Rasmussen’s teammate, Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week for the third time this year. The awards were based off performances from March 26 – April 1.

 

Rivero Crespo’s victory over Michael Murphy at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-2, 7-5 served as the clinching point in VCU’s 4-3 win over UNCW on Saturday. The sophomore from Mallorca, Spain, was also locked in a three-set battle against Old Dominion’s Javier Jover Maestre on Sunday, but the match went unfinished after the clinching point.

Rasmussen, a Holte, Denmark, product, led the Rams to a dominating 6-0 win over Atlantic 10 foe George Washington with wins at both No. 1 doubles and singles. In doubles play, she partnered with Kanako Yano to defeat Melis Bayraktaroglu and Victoria Kogan 6-3. In singles, Rasmussen dispatched Bayraktaroglu in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.

Torre Martin, a freshman from Bilbao, Spain, defeated Michael Copeland at No. 4 singles during a tightly-contested 4-3 VCU win over UNCW on Saturday by a score of 6-2, 7-5. He was also leading Old Dominion’s Jannik Giesse in the second set the next day, but his match went unfinished.

Diaz Delgado, an Almeria, Spain, native, had an undefeated day in VCU’s 6-0 win over conference opponent George Washington. At No. 2 singles, she defeated Sara Grubac 6-4, 6-1. In doubles play, the freshman paired up with Noumea Witmus to beat Grubac and Julia Herlogsson 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
