Garcia, Aughinbaugh Earn Softball Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.Melissa Garcia of Massachusetts was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week while Madie Aughinbaugh of Fordham was named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year. Also honored was Aughinbaugh’s teammate, Paige Rauch, who was named Rookie of the Week, also, for the second time this year. The awards, announced Tuesday, were based off performances from April 2 – 8.   


Garcia batted .750 (6-for-8) with a .818 on-base percentage and slugged 1.125 as UMass swept Saint Joseph’s. The junior from Chino, Calif., went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the opening pair of games to extend her hitting streak to 10 straight at-bats. Garcia hit her first career home run in a 4-0 game two win to cap off another perfect game at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. She picked up two walks and scored a run in game three.

Aughinbaugh made four appearances in five games for the Rams this week, making three starts. The junior from Port Tobacco, Md., rebounded after her lone relief appearance against Lehigh with two stellar starts, going the distance against Binghamton and in the series opener against George Mason, allowing no earned runs combined. Against the Bearcats, Aughinbaugh twirled a three-hit shutout, her fourth of the season, with six strikeouts, then allowed two unearned runs against the Patriots on five hits and one walk. For the week, she allowed eight runs, five earned, on 18 hits over 19.0 innings with 13 strikeouts, good for a 1.84 ERA.

Rauch was instrumental in Fordham’s 4-1 week, starting at the plate and in the circle. At the dish, Rauch slashed .462/.611/1.231 with a team-leading seven runs, scoring at least one in all five games, in 13 at-bats. The freshman from Windsor, N.Y., drove in six runs for the week and launched three home runs, two coming in the series finale win over George Mason. In the circle, she made three appearances, two starts, and notched two wins. Over 13.0 frames, Rauch allowed just six hits, two runs (one earned), and five walks while punching out 13. Rauch recorded wins in the last two games against the Patriots allowing no runs in either appearance.
