NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Rhode Island junior Dawson Jones was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Golfer of the Week, while his freshman teammate Chris Francoeur was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Thursday for events played April 4-11.
Jones finished in a tie for fifth place at the Wildcat Invitational, helping Rhode Island to a second place finish among 19 teams. He carded the low round of the day for the Rams on Tuesday, finishing the par-71 course in 68 strokes. A Howell, N.J., native, his second-round score put him even for the tournament 142 (74-68) and moved him up 17 spots, from 22nd place in the field of 104 golfers.
Francoeur won his second straight A-10 rookie honor with a 145 (73-72) to finish tied for 14th at the Wildcat Invitational. He shot a 72 (+1) in Tuesday’s final round, climbing four spots on the leaderboard. The Amesbury, Mass., product was five-over after nine holes, but birdied five of the next seven to position himself for a strong finish and help the Rams place second.
