SARASOTA, Fla.
– Rhode Island finished 21st in the nation as the Rams completed competition at the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championship Saturday.

With smooth racing conditions at Nathan Benderson Park Saturday, the Rams qualified for the D Finals in all three heats on the final day of competition. It is the third time in as many NCAA Championship appearances that Rhode Island has placed 21st in the nation.

For the second straight day, the Second Varsity 8+ team of Karen Petrik, Courtney Harrington, Maddie Van Ummersen, Kelsey Williams, Lauren Smith, Madalyn Saporito, Sage Iacovazzi, Jennae Alexander and Brooke McMahon was Rhody's top boat. After placing fifth in the C/D semifinals while going against Brown, Washington State, Navy and UCF, Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ boat had a strong finish in the Varsity 8+ flight. The team of Lucy Moyes, Emily Winslow, Erika Pena, Kiana Anderson, Mekenzie Mattheson, Allie Reilly, Katie Shattuck, Katie Usher and Meghan Ellis ran a time of 6:53.862, creating open water between themselves and Jacksonville (7:02.080). Navy (6:42.355) edged Northeastern (6:53.862) to win the D Final and take 19th place.

Matching the V8+ 21st place finish was the V4+ contingent of Tory Bauer, Kira McCully, Erin Shober, Chandler Fisher and Sarah Dudinski. Rhody's V4+ boat held off Jacksonville at the finishing line. The Rams had a time of 7:51.144, coming in just ahead of Jacksonville (7:52.449). Gonzaga won the D Final in a time of 7:36.536.

California won the national title by edging defending champion Washington 130-128 in the final standings. The two schools finished 1-2 in all three flights. Cal won the V4+ final before Washington took the honors in the 2V8+ Grand Final, setting up a dramatic finish in the V8+ Grand Final.
