George Washington, La Salle & Dayton Earn First #A10WSOC Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington's Alexis Williams has been named the first Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the 2018 season, the league announced Monday. Also honored was La Salle goalkeeper, Claudia Jenkins, who was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Dayton's Izzy Greene, who earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards are for games played Aug. 16-19.
Williams, a sophomore from Branchburg, N.J., lifted the Colonials to a 1-0 victory in their season opener against the University of the Pacific, scoring in the 56th minute. The midfielder then gave GW its first goal of the day at Liberty in the 22nd minute. After the Flames tied the game at 1-1 to force overtime, Williams found Sofia Pavon for the game-winner just three minutes into the extra period. Williams paced the team with six shots on the weekend, all of which came on goal, as GW went undefeated in its opening weekend under the direction of first-year head coach Michelle Demko.
Greene scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give the Flyers a come-from-behind victory on the road over James Madison in the JMU Fairfield by Marriott Invitational. It was her first collegiate shot which resulted in her first collegiate goal. The Lyndhurst, Ohio product also had a game-high two shots in Dayton's 2-1 OT win over William & Mary as the Flyers won the weekend tournament.
