La Salle, Dayton, Saint Joseph's Land on Week 1 United Soccer Regional Poll
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - La Salle, Dayton and Saint Joseph's all landed on the United Soccer Coaches' Week One East Regional Poll, released Wednesday after the opening week of play. La Salle topped the list of A-10 teams, coming in at fourth, while Dayton was voted No. 6, and Saint Joseph's at No. 10. George Washington also received votes in the poll.
On the week, the Explorers went 2-0, downing Syracuse, 1-0, on the road and blanking UMBC, 5-0, at home. Redshirt-senior Madison Bower six points on the week with three goals, while sophomore keeper Claudia Jenkins two shutouts on her way to being named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week.
The Flyers also went 2-0 to open the season with a pair of thrilling matches at the JMU Invitational last week, defeating host James Madison, 2-1, followed by an overtime victory against William & Mary, 2-1. Freshman Izzy Greene earned Rookie of the Week honors for her game-winning goal against JMU.
Opening the 2018 campaign at Temple on Friday, the Hawks earned a 2-1 victory over the rival Owls thanks in part to a last-second goal by sophomore Morgan Bower. Saint Joseph's followed up with a 2-0 win over Lehigh on Sunday in which senior Paige Bergman set a new program record for career assists with her 19th.
