Haji Claims Men's Soccer Player of the Week, Nuhu, Barrios, Claim Co-Defensive Players
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU junior Siad Haji was named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Dayton junior Federico Barrios and Fordham senior Rashid Nuhu earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Rhode Island’s Roger Penske was named Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played from Aug. 27- Sept. 2.
Haji, a midfielder from Manchester, N.H., scored back-to-back game-winning goals against Temple and Santa Clara to lift VCU 2-0 on the weekend and earn the tournament championship title. His goal against Temple, the sole goal for VCU, was knocked in off of a converted penalty kick in the 42nd minute. He also scored the lone goal against Santa Clara. Haji was named ODU Soccer Classic Tournament MVP and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Barrios, a goalkeeper from Cali, Columbia, recorded his second shutout in three games this season after powering the Flyers to a 2-0 win over Milwaukee in the Dayton Tournament on Friday. With two saves over 90 minutes, Barrios continues to lead the A-10 in total saves and has contributed to the Flyers’ undefeated season so far.
Nuhu, a goalkeeper from Accra, Ghana, made his season debut on Saturday against Wisconsin and led Fordham to a 1-0 double-overtime win. He posted two saves for his 25th career shutout, which puts him third all-time at Fordham.
Penske, a goalkeeper from Newport Coast, Calif., made four saves in Rhode Island’s 4-0 win at Bryant and stopped three out of three shots he faced in Rhode Island’s 1-0 victory over Penn State. Penske has yet to concede a goal this season and is tied for number one save percentage in the A-10.
