NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham junior Joergen Oland was named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Rhode Island freshman Roger Penske was named Defensive Player of the Week. Massachusetts freshman James McPherson was named Rookie of the Week. All three awards are for games played from Sept. 3 - 9.

Oland, a defender from Drammen, Norway, scored the game-tying goal in two matches this week – both in the final minutes of regulation. On Monday, with Fordham trailing 2-1 to Northwestern, Oland scored in the 83rd minute to tie the game at two, forcing overtime, in which Fordham came away with the win. Oland was also named to the Wisconsin All-Invitational Team. On Saturday, Fordham trailed 1-0 to Bryant until Oland scored in the 88th minute to tie the game, once again forcing overtime. The game ended in a draw after two scoreless overtime periods.

Penske, a goalkeeper from Newport Coast, Calif., recorded his fourth straight shutout in goal for Rhode Island. This is Penske’s third weekly honor from the A-10.  Penske made five saves in Rhode Island’s game against Marist, a season high for the freshman. Penske is currently the only goalkeeper in the A-10 with a perfect record of 0.00 goals against average in the conference standings.

James McPherson, a forward from Danvers, Mass., recorded four points in a seven minute span in a 3-0 shutout win over Bryant. He assisted on the opening goal in the 75th minute against the Bulldogs and followed with his first career goal just under four minutes later. He also added a second assist in the 81st minute. McPherson also created an opportunity on net late in regulation in a 0-0 draw against Clemson.
