NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Rhode Island senior Dawson Jones was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Golfer of the Week, while Davidson freshman Clayton Tribus and St. Bonaventure freshman Erik Stauderman were named the league’s Co-Rookies of the Week. The awards, the first of the 2018-19 season, were announced Friday for events played Sept 7 - 12.
Jones placed third at The Doc Gimmler, finishing the three-round tournament at 5-under par (205). He was under the par of 70 in all three rounds, opening with back-to-back 68s before carding a 69 the third time through. A Howell, N.J. native, Jones led the field of 84 in both pars made (45) and par-4 scoring (-2). His individual score helped the Rams claim the team title as Rhody finished +1 for the three-round tournament.
In his first collegiate tournament, Tribus finished tied for 12th out of 91 competitors with a 36-hole total of 139 (-3). After opening with a 69, the rookie from Madison, Wisc., backed his first collegiate round with another below-par performance, a one-under 70 in the final round.
Stauderman finished tied for second, one shot off the win, in his collegiate debut, helping the Bonnies to a victory over rivals Canisius and Niagara in the Little Three Championship. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., product shot 1-under 71 in round one and even par 72 in second round for 1-under total of 143, just one back of the individual champion. He carded eight birdies over his two rounds.
