VCU's Greene and Sequeira Claim Player of the Week Accolades
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU sophomores Jared Greene and Mario Sequeira claimed Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, the league announced Monday. Duquesne freshman Rob Dymond was named Rookie of the Week. All three awards are for games played from Sept. 17-25.
Greene, a forward from Virginia Beach, Va., set the tone and momentum for VCU this week against No. 20 ranked Old Dominion recording two goals and one assist. His first goal and the second of the game for VCU came when he took advantage of an error made by an ODU defender trying to pass the ball back to the keeper in which Greene intercepted the pass, dribbled around the keeper to shoot and score on an empty net. This set the momentum for VCU as just a minute later, Greene found himself scoring again to put VCU up 3-0 over the Monarchs. Later in the game, Greene assisted Joseph Gonnella on his goal to put VCU up 4-0 and to seal the game.
Sequeira, a goalkeeper from San Jose, Costa Rica, Recorded five saves against No. 20 ODU to record another clean sheet for VCU. With VCU up only 1-0 to begin the second half, Sequiera tallied two back-to-back saves in the 47th minute to keep the Rams on top. Those two clutch saves gave the Rams a morale booster as the rest of the team began to play with much more urgency.
Dymond, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, posted goals in the 38th and 64th minute of Duquesne's 4-1 win over Robert Morris to take over the team lead in goals with three. He had six shots, including three on goal against the Colonials. He now ranks second on the team in shots (15) and tied for third in shots on goal with five. Dymond has started all seven matches this season.
