NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - La Salle sophomore Molly O'Brien was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Also honored was Saint Joseph's Grace Bendon and George Mason's Emma van der Vorst, who earned Defensive Player of the Week, and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively. The awards are for games played Oct. 1-7.
O'Brien, a Media, Pa., product led the Explorers to a 2-0 week, scoring a career-high five points in back-to-back games against St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island. In both games, she scored two goals and an assist for a total of 10 points. The sophomore forward scored the opening goal in the 32nd minute against the Bonnies before assisting on Madison Bower's goal minutes later. O'Brien tallied her second goal of the contest in the 62nd minute. Against Rhode Island, O'Brien assisted Bower's opening goal of the game before finding the back of the net twice in a seven-minute span.
Grace Bendon, a senior goalkeeper from Doylestown, Pa., combined for 10 saves and a 0.50 goals against average in two wins last week. At George Mason, Bendon made a game-high seven saves in a 4-1 win over the Patriots. She followed that up by making three saves versus VCU, earning her fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win.
van der Vorst scored a goal in each of Mason's games last week, including her third game-winner of the season in the 47th minute in the Patriots 1-0 victory at Massachusetts. She also had the lone goal for the Patriots, the first of the game, in a 4-1 loss to Saint Joseph's. The Amsterdam, Netherlands, native leads the Atlantic 10 in goals (10) and points (23). The rookie forward has scored a goal in 10 of the last 11 games and recorded a point in 11 straight matches.
