VCU's Haji and Sequeira earn A-10 Men's Soccer Weekly Accolades
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU teammates Siad Haji and Mario Sequeira claimed this week’s Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, the league announced Monday. Davidson’s Henry Howell and Rhode Island’s Edvin Akselsen were named Co-Rookies of the Week. All three awards are for games played Oct. 1-7.
Haji, a junior midfielder from Manchester, N.H., was a huge asset to VCU’s two victories last week against UMass (2-0) and Duquesne (2-0). He scored the only two goals of the match against Massachusetts, both in the second half. He also recorded two assists on the only two goals against Duquesne.
Mario Sequeira, a sophomore goalkeeper from San Jose, Costa Rica, recorded seven total saves off of 31 total shots faced and two clean sheets this past week in victories over UMass and Duquesne. Against UMass, after Siad Haji's goal to put VCU up 1-0, UMass was awarded a penalty kick and Sequeira made the incredible save to keep the clean sheet going. That save made ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 Plays at #3. His perfect play has allowed VCU to record their seventh clean sheet of the season, which is every win this season for the Rams.

Akselsen, a midfielder/forward from Oslo, Norway, had four points in a 2-1 week for Rhode Island. The freshman recorded a goal and an assist in Wednesday night's win over Saint Louis and picked up another assist - his third of the season - in Saturday's win at St. Bonaventure. Akselsen has collected 11 total points (4g/3a) in seven games this season.
