Rhode Island Blanks Fordham to Advance to A-10 Men's Soccer Semifinals

KINGSTON, R.I.—Fourth-seeded Rhode Island kept No. 5 Fordham out of the net with a 2-0 victory in the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals Sunday at URI Soccer Complex.

 

Rhode Island (13-4-0) was hosting as the higher seed, and now advances to the semifinals, which will be played Friday at Saint Louis University’s Hermann Stadium. They will face the winner of No. 1 VCU and No. 8 Massachusetts.

 

Fordham (8-5-4) kept plenty of offensive pressure on Rhody, with nine first-half shots and eight in the second half. Fordham also had seven corners on the game, but the URI defense and keeper Roger Penske kept the Bronx Rams off the board, saving all seven of the 17 shots that were on goal. Fordham keeper Rashid Nuhu made four saves.

Stavros Zarokostan scored the eventual game-winner for Rhode Island off an assist from Edvin Akselsen in the 27th minute. Akselsen also set up the insurance goal in the second half, setting up Tyler Dickson header to score URI’s second goal in the 72nd minute.

Fordham’s biggest offensive push came from Sameer Fathazada, who had seven shots, three of which were on goal. Zarokostas put all three of his team-leading shot on goal.
