RICHMOND, Va. – Regular season champion VCU edged eighth-seeded Massachusetts in a shootout to advance to the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Conference Championship semifinals in St. Louis next week. Sunday's quarterfinal game, which the top-seeded Rams hosted, ended in a 1-1 tie, requiring the shootout.

VCU (11-5-1) advances to the semifinals to face Rhode Island (13-4-0), on Friday at Saint Louis University’s Hermann Stadium.

VCU took an early lead in the 18th minute as Jared Greene scored on a rebound after Siad Haji's initial shot was saved to put the team up 1-0. UMass had a chance just under a minute later as Clement Benhaddouche's shot hit the crossbar. The Rams took a 1-0 lead into halftime and outshot the Minutemen 10-2 in the first half.

Benhaddouche found the back of the net with the equalizer eight minutes into the second half, finding the top right corner of the goal off the dish from Davis Smith for his first career goal in the 53rd-minute to knot it up at 1-1.

After 20 total minutes of scoreless play in the overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the semifinals. Dorchin came up with a save on VCU's fifth attempt after UMass had one blocked earlier in the sequence to send it to extra penalty kicks at four each before Mario Sequeira saved the sixth and final UMass attempt for the VCU victory.

Both goalies – VCU’s Mario Sequeira and UMass’s Marvyn Dorchin – had 6 saves in regulation play to earn a tie at 1-1.
