Mingachos and Pearson Claim A-10 Offensive Player of the Week Accolades, Gaffney Defensive Player of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason junior Ryan Mingachos and VCU senior Peter Pearson claimed the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades while Davidson junior Sawyer Gaffney was named Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Saint Louis freshman John Klein was named Rookie of the Week. All three awards, the final of the season, are for games played Oct. 29 through the conclusion of the regular season on Oct. 31.
George Mason captain Mingachos, a midfielder from Danbury, Conn., scored two goals in a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday night to close out the regular season in Fairfax. It marked the third multi-goal game of his career. The midfielder scored on a 30-yard shot into the left corner in the 55th minute and then added an insurance goal in the 67th minute from six yards away. He is tied for the team lead in assists (four), is second in points (12) and tied for second in goals scored (four).
Pearson, a midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., scored two goals on four shots in the victory over St. Bonaventure and guided VCU to become the A-10 regular season champions. His first goal came in the 54th minute and tied the match up at 1-1, and he scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute.
Gaffney, a goalkeeper from Richmond, Va., recorded a game-high 7 saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season in Davidson's 1-0 win at Duquesne. In addition to locking up a quarterfinal home game, the win gave Davidson its highest finish in the league since joining the A-10 in July of 2014.
Klein, a forward from Columbia Mo., scored twice in the 3-3 draw on the road at Saint Joseph's on Oct. 31. He has a team-leading nine goals on the year, the most by a Billiken freshman since Vedad Ibisevic in 2003.
