Rhody Edges Top-Seed VCU to Advance to A-10 Men's Soccer Championship Final

By Atlantic 10 Conference

ST. LOUIS – No. 4 Rhode Island scored in the 55th minute to slip past top-seeded VCU, 1-0, in the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Semifinals Friday. Rhody advances to the A-10 Championship Final for the first time since 2014.

Rhode Island (14-4-0) will face the winner of No. 3 George Mason/No. 7 Dayton, which are playing in the second semifinal Friday. URI was playing in its fifth straight A-10 semifinals and got revenge on VCU, which beat Rhody 2-0 in last year’s semifinals.

Two of the A-10’s most potent offenses, neither VCU nor Rhody could score before halftime, despite having chances. VCU led in first half shots 7-5.

Rhode Island broke through in the 56th minute when VCU goalkeeper Mario Sequeira came out to challenge the Rhody attack, but Stavros Zarokostas and Chae Brangman were able to keep Sequeira from securing the ball, giving Brangman a shot on net, which he chipped over the collapsing VCU defense for the game’s only score.

Each keeper made six saves in the game, while VCU led in shots, 17-12. Rhode Island had a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, and each team had two corners.
