Robinson's Golden Goal Sends Mason to Men's Soccer Championship Final
ST. LOUIS – Grant Robinson scored a golden goal in the 102nd minute of overtime to lead No. 3 George Mason to a 1-0 win over No. 7 Dayton in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals Friday night at Saint Louis’ Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Patriots (9-7-0) advance to Sunday’s Championship final to face No. 4 Rhode Island, which defeated No. 1 VCU in Friday’s first semifinal. Kick-off Sunday is at noon central time, and it will mark George Mason’s first appearance in an A-10 title game since the 2013 season when it won the A-10 Championship. The championship game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
Robinson fired a shot through traffic from 23 yards out, after Tunde Akinlosotu skipped a corner kick to the top of the box. UD keeper Federico Barrios was screened and had no chance to make a play on the hard-fired shot.
Robinson’s goal broke a long deadlock that saw both team have fantastic scoring opportunities throughout the game. Shots were almost even, with Dayton (9-6-4) holding a 13-12 edge, while corner kicks were even at three apiece. Mason keeper Clark Gronek made five saves.
