Rhode Island Wins 2018 A-10 Men's Soccer Championship
ST. LOUIS – Rhode Island posted its third straight shutout to win the 2018 Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. The fourth-seeded Rams beat No. 3 George Mason, 2-0 Sunday at Robert R. Hermann Stadium to claim the title, their seventh overall and first since 2006.
Rhody (15-4) earns the A-10 automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 48-team field will be announced Monday at 1:00 pm ET on NCAA.com.
Defender Tyler Dickson was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player for leading the URI defense to three straight shutouts during the championship. Rams keeper Roger Penske, who made 19 saves for the championship, including six on Sunday, also earned a spot on the All-Championship Team for his defensive prowess.
Rhode Island got a first-half goal on a penalty kick by Dominik Richter at 15:10, and held the 1-0 lead through most of the game, despite multiple offensive chances by George Mason (9-8), who totaled 17 shots for the game. Emil Jesman Sunde buried the insurance goal in the 86th minute after passes from Peder Kristiansen and All-Championship performer Chae Brangman.
Mason keeper Clark Gronek, who had a pair of tournament shutouts entering Sunday, made six saves and also earned a spot on the All-Championship Team. Joining Gronek on the All-Championship Team from George Mason were Grant Robinson, who had the golden goal in the semifinals for the Patriots, and Pablo Pertusa.
In addition to Dickson, Penske and Brangman, Rhode Island also had Richter and Stavros Zarokostas named to the All-Championship Team. Rok Taneski and Elias Harryson from Dayton and VCU keeper Mario Sequeira rounded out the All-Championship team.
