Dayton Claims the 2018 A-10 Volleyball Championship in a Thrilling Five-Set Win Over VCU
RICHMOND, Va. —Dayton (23-8) captured its fourth Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship in five years Sunday in thrilling fashion, defeating VCU 3-2 (18-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-16, 15-12) in the championship final at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The Flyers will receive the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Selection show will be held on Sunday, November 25 at 9:00 pm ET on ESPNU.
VCU jumped to a fast start and took the first set by a score of 25-18 after winning six of the seven final points of the set. Dayton responded in the second set winning 25-15 after closing out the set with five straight points.
The Rams won the third set 25-19, before the Flyers came back and won the fourth set 25-16 to even the match.
Trailing 10-7 in the final frame, the Flyers rolled off four straight points to take an 11-10 advantage before pulling out the win 15-12.
Dayton’s Lauren Bruns recorded a match-high 19 kills and was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Performer. She was joined on the A-10 All-Championship team by teammates Kendyll Brown, who hit .458 and had seven blocks, and Brooke Westbeld, who recorded 22 assists, 12 kills and 16 digs.
Leading the way for VCU was Vicky Giommarini who had 14 kills. With the loss, VCU falls 19-9 on the season.
Also honored as members of the All-Championship team were VCU’s Giommarini, Jasmin Sneed and Gina Tuzzolo along with Saint Louis’ Maya Taylor.
