George Washington's Wolst and Atherley take A10 Swimming & Diving Weekly awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington senior Tommi Wolst and junior teammate Gemma Atherley claimed the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week accolades, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Davidson freshman Thacher Scannell and George Washington freshman Isabela Patino were awarded Men’s and Women’s Rookies of the Week. All four awards are for meets held from Jan. 7-13.


Wolst picked up a pair of individual wins, a runner-up finish and contributed to a relay victory in GW's sweep of local foes Georgetown and American last Saturday. The Leipzig, Germany, native took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.85) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.98). He also swam the second leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay and came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.71).


Atherley won all three of her swims on Saturday to contribute to the Colonials’ victory. Her 200-yard backstroke time of 2:02.87 and the team’s 200-yard freestyle relay time of 1:36.40 were good for top finishes and pool records. The Jersey, Channel Islands, native also took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.63.


Scannell won two events for Davidson in a dual meet against UNCW on Jan. 11. The Stamford, Conn., native won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.54 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 9:38.29.


Patino picked up a pair of individual victories, in GW’s victory as well swimming a career-best time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.10) for a first-place finish and taking the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.06. The Ladera Ranch, Calif., native also claimed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.59) and swam on the 200-yard medley relay that took third.
