First #A10MTEN & #A10WTEN Weekly Awards Announced
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - VCU's Inigo Torre Martin and Davidson's Sam Kavarna have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday. On the women's side, Anna Rasmussen of VCU and Samantha Armas of Davidson shared Player of the Week honors, while Wildcat teammate Elizabeth Truluck earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards are the first of the year for matches played Jan. 14-20.
Martin helped the Rams to three team victories to open the season, winning each of his singles and doubles matches against Drexel, Campbell
Kavarna, a Charleston, S.C., native began his collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles during Davidson's 7-0 win at home against Boston.
Rasmussen won each of her matches last week as the Rams opened their spring slate, 2-0 against Campbell and Drexel. The senior from Holte, Denmark, paired with Melissa Ifidzhen to defeat the top doubles competition from Cambell 6-1, and Drexel, 7-5. In singles competition, Rasmussen outscored her opponents 24-6 at No. 2 singles, defeating the Camels' Lou Regen 6-0, 6-1 and Katerina Majorova of Drexel, 6-2, 6-3.
Armas had a perfect weekend, going 4-0 in singles and doubles and played a big part in helping the Wildcats to wins over Appalachian State and UNC Asheville on the road. In addition to a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles, the junior from Acworth, Ga., clinched the final match point in a 4-3 win against ASU with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles. She also scored a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against the Bulldogs, while helping earn the doubles point with a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Truluck, a Myrtle Beach, S.C., native went a combined 4-0 in her first two collegiate matches in singles and doubles against Appalachian State and UNC Asheville last weekend. She tallied a 6-3 doubles win in first career match App State and then rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. She then followed that up with a 6-1 doubles win at UNCA and then scored 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 4 singles as Davidson rolled to a 7-0 win.
