Wolbert, Gouger Claim A-10 Swimming & Diving Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle freshman Zachary Wolbert and Richmond junior Hannah Gouger were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Saint Louis’ Janssen Gamilla and Richmond’s Maggie Purcell claimed Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week accolades. All awards are for meets held from Jan. 21-27.

 

Wolbert claimed the top spot in three events on Monday in a win over Loyola (MD.). The East Stroudsburg, Pa., native won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50:05, the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50:63 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53:00. Wolbert also won two events in a dual meet against Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, placing first in the 200-meter individual medley (2:07.29) and the 100-meter butterfly (57.74).

 

Gouger won both the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.63) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.46), recording season-best times in each event. Both her 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard backstroke times rank as the second-best in the A-10 this season. The Cockeysville, Md., product was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay that took second, turning in a season-best time of 3:30.76 and the 200-yard medley relay team, finishing with another season-best time of 1:45.80.

 

Gamilla placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.44, good for the 18th fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season. The Aurora, Ill., native also placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.77.

 

Purcell finished with the top time in two events in a dual meet against James Madison this weekend at the Robins Center Natatorium. The freshman from Southampton, N.Y., took first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.13) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.80), each with team-best times this season. The 200 individual medley time is good for the sixth-best time in the A-10 this season and the 200-yard breaststroke time ranks as the second-best time in the league this season. Purcell also claimed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.59) and took part in the medley relay team that set a season-best time during the event, swimming the second leg and finishing with a time of 1:45.80.
