Connolly and Guhman Earn A-10 Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Duquesne sophomore Michaela Connolly was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week while Davidson junior Delaney Guhman was named Defensive Player of the week, the league announced Monday. George Mason’s Deanna Balsama was named Rookie of the Week. The awards were the first of the 2019 season and were based off games played Feb. 4-10.
Connolly finished with a game-high six points to lead the Dukes to a 22-9 win over Longwood in the season opener on Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field. The victory gave first-year head coach Corinne Desrosiers her first victory with the Dukes. Connolly, a native of Sykesville, Md., recorded her first career hat trick to go with three assists while also tallying a team-high six ground balls in the triumph for Duquesne.
Guhman won her first career game between the pipes in a 12-4 run at Winthrop, allowing just one goal in the second half. The goalie from Greensboro, N.C., finished with six saves and two groundballs in the win.
Balsama scored the first two goals of her collegiate career at No. 2 Maryland in a 16-5 loss on Saturday. The Sewell, N.J., product fired off six shots, including five on goal, and won a draw control in her collegiate first start.
