A-10 Swimming and Diving Conference Championships Begin Wednesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The George Washington Colonials Men’s Swimming and Diving team seeks its third championship victory while the Duquesne women look to defend their first-ever conference title at the 2019 Atlantic 10 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which begin Wednesday, February 20th and conclude Saturday, February 23rd at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The Colonials look to capture their third consecutive championship title. In 2018, GW took the men’s title with 689 points. This year’s team is led by new head coach, Brian Thomas along with the 2017 A-10 Rookie Performer of the year, junior Moritz Fath.

Also contending for the men’s title will be last year’s runner-up, George Mason, along with Davidson, Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Saint Louis, and St. Bonaventure

On the women’s side, Duquesne looks to defend its A-10 title after breaking Richmond’s seven-year winning streak in 2018. The Dukes took last year’s women’s title with 567 points – nine points ahead of the Spiders. The Dukes are led by the 2017 A-10 Coach of the Year, Dave Sheets. The 2018 Most Outstanding Rookie, Emma Brinton, also returns to the pool, hoping to help Duquesne to another A-10 victory.

Also in contention for the women’s title will be last year’s runner-up, Richmond, along with Davidson, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Saint Louis, and St. Bonaventure.

The Championship begins at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 20th with the trials of the men’s one-meter diving competition, followed by the finals of the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays at 5:00 pm, along with the finals of the men’s one-meter diving competition. The Championships continue at 10:00 am on Thursday with preliminaries, followed by the finals at 6:30 pm. The same schedule will be following on Friday and Saturday.
