Davidson Picked to Repeat as Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Champions
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Defending champion Davidson men’s golf has been selected to win the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship in the league’s annual Championship Poll, which was released Thursday following A-10 Match play, which serves as the annual kickoff to the spring season.
The Wildcats garnered nine first-place votes in the poll, which was conducted among the league’s head golf coaches. Davidson won last year at last year’s championship and returns all five member of last year’s championship team, including A-10 medalist Mike Blasey. Alex Ross (tied for third) and Hoke Carlton (tied for eighth) also had top 10 finishes at last year’s A-10 Championship. Dayton, led by longtime head coach Tim Straub, totaled 118 points in the poll.
VCU, which has won three of the last five championships, was picked second in the poll with 104 points. The Rams received two first-place votes and are anchored by sophomore Sachin Kumar, who placed seventh at last year’s championship, and Kristian Tannum Donaldson, who was named All-Conference in 2018. Richmond, the 2017 A-10 champion, finished third in the poll with 100 points and returns four of the five golfers from last year’s fifth-place championship finish.
Dayton finished fourth in the poll with 89 points, followed by George Mason in fifth with 63 points. Rhode Island and George Washington tied for sixth in the poll with 60 points each and St. Bonaventure had 56 points for eighth place.
Saint Joseph’s (35 points), Fordham (23 points) and La Salle (17 points) rounded out the poll.

A-10 Match Play concluded Tuesday at the Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla. George Washington men’s golf won the fourth annual A-10 Match Play to claim its first title.
The 2019 Atlantic 10 men's golf championship begins Friday, April 26 at The Villas at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla. The 11 A-10 golf teams will play 18 holes per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Practice rounds are slated for Thursday. Admission to the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship is free. The winner of the 54-hole event will receive the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
