Lowe, Donaldson Share First Spring Golfer of the Week Honors; Jung Chosen as Rookie of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Washington senior Logan Lowe and VCU sophomore Kristian Tannum Donaldson were named Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Golfers of the Week, while George Mason freshman Sam Jung was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Friday for events played Feb. 1-20 and are the first of the spring season.
Lowe helped lead GW to its first team title of the season as the Colonials won the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship in Weston, Fla. The Grass Valley, Calif., native was a perfect 3-0-0 in match play as the Colonials took victories over Dayton, Oakland and Florida Atlantic all by the score of 3.5 to 2.5. Anchoring the GW lineup and facing the opposition's top player in all three rounds, Lowe won by scores of 4&3, 3&2 and 2&1. In the championship match versus FAU, Lowe clinched the match for GW when he sunk a 10-foot par putt on 17 to win 2&1.
Donaldson fired back-to-back 67s on the way to a runner-up finish in a field of 92 golfers -- his highest as a Ram -- in the spring-opening Martin Downs Collegiate. A native of Buckinghamshire, England, he recorded 16 birdies in the tournament. He led VCU to a fifth-place finish in the three-round event with an eight-under 208 (67-67-74).
Jung won all three of his matches during the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championships on Monday and Tuesday in Weston, Fla. On Monday, the Centreville, Va., native defeated Oakland's Chris Handy 2&1 in the first matchup of the day. He then finished 1-up against Dayton's Domenic Maricocchi later in the afternoon. On Tuesday, he won 2-up against Wills Montgomery from Saint Joseph's.
