George Washington's Cone Named A-10 Softball Player of the Week; Lange Named Pitcher of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington junior Jenna Cone was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week while her sophomore teammate Sierra Lange was named Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Massachusetts’ Kenadee Rausch was named Rookie of the Week. The awards are based off performances from Feb. 18-24.
Cone hit .571 (8-for-14) with four runs scored and three RBI in helping the Colonials to a 4-0 week. The junior slugger had two doubles in a 5-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday before cracking her first home run of the season in a 7-6 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. She had hits in all four games with three of them multi-hit efforts.
Lange put together another strong weekend in the circle, earning three wins after pitching to a 1.40 ERA over 15 innings with a pair of complete games. She allowed just six hits and struck out 26 against four walks for the week. Her best effort came Sunday against Lafayette when she tossed a complete game one-hitter with a career-high 14 strikeouts. After allowing a first-inning triple, she retired the last 19 batters she faced. Lange also got it done at the plate, hitting .692 (9-for-13) with three runs, three RBI and three extra-base hits.
Rausch threw a complete game in a 2-1 win over Bryant on Saturday, striking out a career-high seven batters while allowing no earned runs with two walks The Gilbert, Ariz., native picked up her fifth strikeout of the game in the fourth inning to leave a Bryant runner stranded on third and worked around a leadoff base hit in the seventh inning to keep Bryant off the board while leaving a runner stranded in scoring position.
